Remember Death, Keep Your Mind Attached to God
Explanation - Radha Govind Geet
jo bhī āye jāye vaha goviṃda rādhe।
koī kamā ke jāye koī gaṁvā de॥
Whether it is an incarnation of God, a saint, or a soul bound by Maya, everyone who comes into this world must depart one day.
The only difference is that some accrue spiritual merit through devotional practice before departing, while others lose the human body by procrastinating devotion.
aṃta mati soi gati goviṃda rādhe।
yā te china china mana hari meṃ lagā de॥
The mind is the doer of all actions. Therefore, the mind must be attached to God. But there is one very important thing that you are either overlooking or about which your mind is deceiving you - this human body, with which you are attaching your mind, can be lost at any moment. If this fact remains deeply ingrained in your intellect at all times, then your mind will not engage in wrong deeds.
Your mind must always remain engaged in the service of God and Guru, because in your final moments, your thoughts will dwell where your attachment lies. Your thoughts will determine your destination after death. If your mind remains absorbed in God and Guru at the time of your death, you are guaranteed to go to Golok. However, if your mind remains attached to worldly relationships, your destination will follow that attachment. Even a great paramahans like Jad Bharat had to take birth as a deer because his mind was attached to a fawn at the time of his death.
Therefore, you should always keep death in mind. Do not forget two things - death and God. If you forget death, you will forget God. You will say, "I know everything; I will do sadhana."
You have received the association of a genuine saint, who has explained that practicing devotion with the physical senses alone will not lead you to the goal. You must attach your mind to the Supreme power - nothing can be a greater virtue or fortune than this.
The Vedas and scriptures contain numerous apparent contradictions, and even if one studied them for countless lifetimes, one cannot attain true spiritual knowledge without the guidance of a genuine saint, no matter how many books one memorizes. Still, you make the mistake of saying, "I will do sadhana." You do not practice detaching your mind from worldly relationships.
Antahu tohiń tajenge paamar! Tū na tajai abahīte. (Tulasidas) -
Everyone will abandon you one day. The tears people shed for you are also for their own self-interest, and they, too, will forget you after some time. Therefore, you must always stay alert and keep your mind constantly engaged in devotion.
