Daily Devotion -Mar 5, 2026 (English)- Who is Gauranga Mahaprabhu?
Gauranga Mahaprabhu incarnated 500 years ago. Who is Gauranga Mahaprabhu? - This is not a subject to be explained, described, or understood. Nevertheless, Shri Maharaj Ji is presenting a brief introduction since the scriptures and saints have revealed about Him.
Shri Krishna alone is the Lord of innumerable brahmands(cosmic worlds), the all-seeing, all-controlling, all-witnessing, a friend to all, the almighty Lord to all. Countless Brahmas, Vishnus, Shivas, etc., are all under His control. The same Sri Krishna, an ocean of bliss, descended out of His compassion and grace. In every divine descension of God, there is something unique. The most extraordinary traits of Gauranga Mahaprabhu's descension are:
- The widespread reason for the Lord's incarnation is - paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṃ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām - God says that "I repeatedly incarnate to protect the holy men, destroy the demons, and re-establish the principles of righteousness. But Gauranga Prabhu vowed to bestow His divine love on all living beings and demons without wielding any weapons. This is because those demons who are killed by God do attain liberation but remain bereft of the bliss of divine love. In His other descensions, God destroyed demons, but not in this descension. This is the specialty of this incarnation. In the episode of Jagai-Madhai, when He invoked His disc due to entering a trance, He did not actually use it because the devotees reminded Him of His vow. So Gauranga Mahaprabhu is the only descension who vowed to bestow divine love on all souls without using weapons. Hence, He is considered the greatest among all incarnations.
- In each descension, God establishes the ideals as per the situation and condition of the souls of that era. The state of the souls in this age of Kali is most pitiable. So God thought that to uplift these souls, He had to do something that would enable even the staunchest atheists to attain their welfare. Therefore, abandoning all other practices, He propagated the sankirtan of God's Names, forms, pastimes, abodes, etc., along with Roopdhyan (loving remembrance of the divine form of God) alone.
- Guru-bhakti (devotion to the spiritual master) was the most prominent aspect of Gauranga Mahaprabhu's life. From the Vedas to the Ramayana, all scriptures state that Krishna-bhakti and Guru-bhakti are one and the same. However, Krishna-bhakti is difficult because we have not seen God directly. We only hear about and read what Shri Krishna looks like. Hence, developing pure love for Him is difficult. Therefore, Gauranga Mahaprabhu adopted the principle that Vedavyasa also presented in his Puranas for those on the path of Raganuga bhakti: "gurubhaktyā ca milati, gurudevatātma" – everything is attained through devotion to the Guru. You can simultaneously practice devotion to Sri Krishna for support, but whatever will be attained is through guru-bhakti alone. Gauranga Mahaprabhu strictly adopted the rule of following the Guru's instructions 100% because if the Guru's order is defied, even after crying incessantly and falling unconscious for innumerable kalpas, one cannot attain God. There is no greater offense than disobeying the Guru's instructions. "Acharyavan purusho hi veda" – the intellect must be tied to the Guru's instructions every moment. If the intellect deviates from that even for a second, everything becomes zero.
